Summary:
Fantastic animation, a great cast, and hilarious laughs make Finding Nemo a must see movie for the summer.

Story:
Marlin is a clown fish living in the Great Barrier Reef off of Australia. After having lost his wife and most of his kids in a barracuda attack, he�s extremely protective of his only surviving son, Nemo. Nemo and Marlin love each other, but Nemo has been frustrated by his father�s overprotectiveness. Unfortunately, when Nemo defies his father and sneaks off on his own, he�s caught by a diver. Nemo is taken as a pet fish and placed in a dentist office aquarium in Sydney with a variety of other fish. Led by Gill, the aquarium fish are trying to make their own escape.

Meanwhile, Marlin desperately chases after his son, but soon loses him. Dory, a fish with a short-term memory problem, helps him try to find Nemo. Thanks to left behind clues, they know where he is. The only problem is getting to him. Together they face the dangers of the ocean including sharks, jellyfish, fishermen, seagulls and more in order to rescue him. However, Marlin can only find his son if he learns to let go and trust the friends he meets along the way.

What Worked:
I�m a big fan of Pixar�s films, so I was greatly relieved to see that Finding Nemo was not a stinker. After a long string of hits, they are definitely due for a bomb, but this isn�t it. If I had to rank it among the other Pixar films, I�d place it on par with Monsters Inc. (Toy Story 2 remains my favorite.)

What really makes Finding Nemo unique is the whole fishy setting. The backgrounds are stunning and filled with life and motion. The characters are bizarre, beautiful, eccentric, cute, scary, and amusing. You get a real sense of discovery watching the film. It seems like an alien world, but it�s all very based in reality. The beauty of the marine environment makes the sterile dentist office and aquarium all the more unappealing. The stunning animation by Pixar really brings it all to life. While I didn�t like the murky look of the ocean at first, it did end up standing out in stark contrast to the crystal clear aquarium of the office. The lighting, texture, and detail on all the characters is amazing, even when they�re caught out of water.

I�ve always loved the ocean and sea creatures. I�ve even kept a saltwater tank with a clown fish and anemone. Based on that familiarity, I think I was even more open to the sea life jokes than others might be. The seagulls, hated by many, are a reoccurring joke through the film as they annoyingly squawk, �Mine!� A group of sharks, led by a Great White named Bruce (and voiced by the guy that is Dame Edna), form a support group for those addicted to eating fish. Some of their side comments are really hilarious and culminate with a feeding frenzy to make Jaws proud. A shrimp maniacally cleans the scum out of a tank while children tapping on the glass terrorize other fish. You also learn that life in an aquarium either drives fish insane or teaches them a lot about dentistry (just in case you ever wondered what they thought about while floating around watching you). It�s all really amusing, and if you know any marine biologists, they�re going to get a real kick out of this film.

Not all of the jokes are about the sea, though. There are some funny jokes about dentists in the movie, surfer lingo, and more. There�s even a fantastic chase sequence between Nigel the pelican and a group of the annoying seagulls. It culminates with a hilarious fight scene in the dentist�s office.

The cast is fantastic. Albert Brooks is perfectly cast as Marlin. His frantic behavior is perfectly captured by Brooks. Ellen DeGeneres is great as the absent minded Dory. While I�m no fan of DeGeneres, I can�t think of anyone better than her to play the character. Willem Dafoe is good as Gill, another fish taken from the sea and raised in an aquarium. His drive to escape is made believable by Dafoe. Barry Humphries is funny as Bruce, the Great White shark. I had no idea this was the same guy that acts as Dame Edna. Hulk fans may be interested to note that Eric Bana plays Anchor, one of his shark support group members. Brad Garrett returns to a Pixar role as Bloat and John Ratzenberger keeps his role as the Pixar good luck charm, this time as a school of Moonfish. Geoffrey Rush is also hilarious as Nigel, the pelican who seems to have a problem spotting windows. Together, they all make this a fun film and they really bring their characters to life.

On a side note, keep an eye out for the traditional Pixar Easter Eggs through the film. You�ll spot Buzz Lightyear in one scene, Mike from Monsters Inc. during the credits, and references to Psycho and The Shining. Also, be sure to stay through the credits to see a funny bit at the very end. The funny Pixar short Knick Knack, about a snowman trying to escape his snow globe, is attached to the beginning of the film.

What Didn�t Work:
I loved this film, but I didn�t rate it as high as the other Pixar films. It slowed down a bit in a few spots and caused the kids to get antsy. The pacing alternates between frantic chases and slow, emotional, dramatic moments. The trailers and commercials also show practically all of the best moments in the film. There are very few surprises.

Parents might want to be aware that there are some scary moments. For example, while the sharks are more or less good characters, Bruce does go into a frenzy and tries to eat our heroes. Seeing a Great White with black eyes, rows of sharp teeth, a loud voice, and a massive charging body is an awesome sight. Some kids with us weren�t fazed by it while others cowered and hid their eyes. Your kid�s reaction may vary. Marlin�s wife and kids are also all eaten in a rather scary moment. Though it happens off screen, it might be too intense for some kids. Then there�s the basic plot that is about a child being kidnapped. As if kids didn�t have reason enough to be afraid of being snatched, this might play on those fears. Fortunately, it�s buried in enough comedy and animation to not be obvious.

The Bottom Line:
Finding Nemo is a movie both kids and adults will enjoy. If you�ve enjoyed the other Pixar films, you�ll love this one.

Columbia Pictures Revisits The Anderson Tapes

Columbia Pictures is readying an updated version of its 1971 high-tech heist thriller The Anderson Tapes, with Jerry Maguire producer Laurence Mark set to produce from a script penned by the writing team of Laurence Malkin and Chad Thumann.

The original film, which starred Sean Connery, Christopher Walken and Dyan Cannon, centered on a career thief paroled from prison who resides in a posh apartment building with his girlfriend. With financing from the mob, the thief plans to rob the building, unaware that his every move is being recorded by law enforcement officials hoping to take down the crime kingpins.

"A high-tech heist movie is what 'The Anderson Tapes' will be, revolving around a crime that in this new version is entirely planned to be committed in full view of the most advanced surveillance equipment," Mark said. "That's the conceit of it -- and, hopefully, the fun of it."

Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman both talked to Entertainment Tonight about their roles in Sony's upcoming Underworld.

Of her daring choice to play an undead warrior, Beckinsale says the harder the role, the better. "That's the whole point for me. I think the more frightened you are and the more convinced you are that you can't do it, that's the job you should take."

This Romeo-and-Juliet story with a twist was quite an experience for the stars, who both wondered if they were up for the grueling shoot.

"I've never done anything like this," says Speedman. "All the training, running around and getting shot at -- I wanted to see if I'd like it. It was a lot of hard work, but was definitely cool to do."

Beckinsale also admits that she wasn't sure if sexy Speedman would be able to handle the exhausting work! "He was amazingly able to withstand the physical pain. I wasn't expecting that. He's so pretty that you don't think he'd stay in freezing cold water for 10 hours and come back asking for more."

The Coming Soon! Box Office Report has been updated with this weekend's studio estimates. Be sure to stay tuned there for the final figures on Monday afternoon.

Jack Black took over the #1 spot at the box office with Paramount's School of Rock. The comedy earned an impressive $20.2 million from 2,614 locations for a strong average of $7,727. The film was budgeted at about $32 million.

Denzel Washington's Out of Time debuted in second place with $17 million from 3,076 theaters. The MGM thriller averaged $5,526 and carries a $50 million production cost.

The Rock's The Rundown dropped to third and 47.3% in its second weekend. The action comedy collected $9.8 million and has a total of $32.7 million so far.

Diane Lane's Under the Tuscan Sun took the fourth spot and dipped just 18.9% in its second weekend for a sum of $7.9 million. The romantic comedy is up to $20.9 million.

New Line's Secondhand Lions rounded out the top five with $5.4 million. The film has earned $30.8 million in three weeks.

Other notables include Focus Features' Lost in Translation, which added 376 theaters for a total of 864 and managed to increase sales to $4.3 million and push its total to $14.2 million, Lions Gate Films' Wonderland, which took $90,000 from 5 theaters for an average of $18,000, and Miramax's The Station Agent, which opened in just 3 theaters and made $55,500 with an average of $18,500.

What's Next for ILM on Star Wars: Episode III

The latest official Star Wars Homing Beacon newsletter included an update on what's next for Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) now that the first phase of principal photography is complete for Star Wars: Episode III.

Lucasfilm says that the artists at ILM are sparing no time in tackling the thousands of effects shots required to complete this final chapter of the Star Wars saga. While a trio of ILM crew observed the shooting in Sydney, Australia, a growing team back in Northern California has already been busy working on creating digital assets required for their work.

Visual Effects Supervisors John Knoll and Pablo Helman, and Matchmove Supervisor Jason Snell depart Australia this week for ILM's facilities. Both Knoll and Helman are scheduled to work the day after they arrive. "We'll be supervising model development and Viewpaint right away," says Knoll. "That's already been going on, so there's some catching up for us to do. George [Lucas] said he'd get us the first Yoda sequences to begin working on in a month or so."

Animation Supervisor Rob Coleman, who spent time on the set earlier in production, is beginning to assemble a team of animators to create the wide range of major digital characters in "Episode III". "Rob will start animating in October," says Helman. "He's got a list of who his team is going to be, but he's not going to be putting that together until next month."

Jason Snell will be delivering his accurate digital wireframe models of the sets that he's made during production based on photographs and measurements taken in person. The matchmovers at ILM will begin to create virtual additions and enhancements to the tangible sets.

"The first thing I'll do is take all the models that I've built and clean them up and color-code them, and submit them to the Sets/Creatures assets area," he says. "When the plates start coming in, the matchmovers will check out the set environments that I created to be able to work with them. That first week, I'll organize all my sets and put them into a database. The following week, I'll be working with model makers, specifically the hard surface modelmakers who are building the set extensions to make sure they are the proper scale and will work with the models that I work with, and I'll do that until we start getting plates."

Star Wars: Episode III is scheduled for a May, 2005 release date.

With Alien: The Director's Cut opening at the end of the month, Ridley Scott is talking about the re-release and also the possibility of him directing a fifth film.

The Star-Ledger says that Scott is in talks with 20th Century Fox and that he would take a less-is-more approach and return the franchise to its horror genre roots.

"I'd like to go back to do a tight movie, one-on-one," said Scott. "I think that's always scarier. When you get too many aliens, it diminishes the terror. It becomes an action movie, whereas ours was about flat-out terror."

The trade reports that he's also talking to James Cameron about the project.

In New York, Holly had a good job that turned into a career, and Holly was promoted to a powerful position in the Nakatomi Corporation. The promotion called for Holly to move to Los Angeles to work in the Nakatomi Plaza, a 40 story building. John stayed in New York because he didn't think Holly would make it out in Los Angeles, and that she would come crawling back to him in New York, so John figured that there was no reason to pack his things for the move to Los Angeles. A limo driver named Argyle drives John to the Nakatomi Plaza, and John heads to the 30th floor, where a Christmas party is going on. John gets into an argument with Holly in the office of her drug-snorting co-worker Harry Ellis because Holly uses her maiden name Gennero instead of the name McClane on her nameplate in her office. Holly leaves the room to give a speech. While John is by himself in the office, John is wishing that the argument hadn't happened. A few minutes later, a group of German terrorists led by Hans Gruber and his right hand man Karl enter the building and take everyone hostage on the 30th floor. John is able to avoid being taken hostage because Hans and his men don't even know that John is in the building. John heads to the upper floors, which are still under construction. Hans takes Holly's boss Joseph Yashinobo Takagi to an office, where Hans demands that Takagi give him the computer code key that will allow Hans and his men to start opening the building's safe so they can steal the $640,000,000 in negotiable bearer bonds that are in the safe. Takagi refuses to cooperate with Hans, so Hans kills Takagi, and John witnesses it. Hans tells his technology expert Theo to start working on getting the safe opened, and Theo thinks it'll take a couple of hours to do it. John frantically tries to find a way to alert the LAPD, realizing that the main phone lines in the building have been cut. Once the police do arrive, they prove to be incompetent under the command of arrogant deputy chief Dwayne T. Robinson, so it's up to John to rescue the hostages.

Bill Murray has signed to voice the role of Garfield the Cat in the upcoming Garfield film for 20th Century Fox. The movie, based on the comic strip, features a sardonic cat who must tolerate the indignity of being saddled with a nebbish owner (Breckin Meyer) and a nitwit dog as housemates.

Drawn by Jim Davis, "Garfield" marks its 25th anniversary on June 19, having debuted in 1978 in 41 U.S. newspapers. Today it is one of the most widely syndicated strips in the world, appearing in 2,570 newspapers in 111 countries.

Writer/director Roland Emmerich's The Day After Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on Memorial Day, 2004. In the film, Dennis Quaid plays a climatologist who tries to figure out a way to save the world from abrupt global warming. He must get to his young son (Jake Gyllenhaal) in New York, which is being taken over by a new ice age. Here's 'anonymous' with a word on the special effects (includes possible spoilers)...

Just had a conversation with a guy who did some FX work for this film, and he told me that Emmerich has asked the FX people to digitally scan the entire island of Manhattan. From what I understand this was done for a huge scene where a gigantic tidal wave washes over the city (I saw some pre-vis work on this, but nothing final) and a scene of a giant oil tanker floating between the skyscrapers. (again, only in pre-vis now).

Another snippet of info he gave me was that the real interesting part of this film comes only after the destruction (LA torn apart by tornados, NY by tidal wave). The movie is focused more on the survival of the human race after the Ice age hits, and not so much during the destruction.

He said that they are hard at work to finish a few shots asap for a teaser that should be coming out soon.
